COIMBATORE: At a time when western Tamil Nadu is emerging as one of the higher educational hubs in Tamil Nadu, paradoxically, four of the eight districts in the region have figured among the Top 3 low performing regions in literacy rate in the State. The Census 2011 provisional data on rural-urban distribution of population in Tamil Nadu released on Tuesday revealed that among the urban population, Dharmapuri district had the lowest literacy rate of 74.23%.Kanyakumari district, the southern most tip of the State, has registered the highest literacy rate of 92.40%. While Erode comes second in the list of low literacy rate (79.63%) among urban population; Namakkal, which has several muchsought after schools that focus on topping the Plus Two board examinations, comes third with an urban literacy rate of 79.66%.Among the rural population too, Dharmapuri tops the low literacy rate chart with 62.69%, followed by Erode (66%) and Salem (66.16%). When it comes to female literacy, while Salem and Erode have earned the dubious distinction of having the lowest rates of 56.71% and 56.88% respectively among the rural population.Dharmapuri comes next with a female literacy rate of 57.80%.Among the urban population, the female literacy rates have remained low in Dharmapuri (70.25%), Erode (72.79%) and Namakkal (72.86%).A major redeeming feature for the Western region is that Coimbatore, with an approximate literate population of 21.2 lakh, comes only behind Chennai (38.5 lakh) in terms of districts which have the highest number of literates in urban areas.
