New Delhi: Indian boxer L Devendro Singh (49kg) outpointed Asylbek Nazaraliev of Kyrgyzstan 14-8 on Monday to qualify for the second round of the AIBA World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The nimble-footed Manipur lad displayed why he was chosen in the team ahead of big names like Asian Championship silver-medallists Amandeep Singh and Thokchom Nanao Singh.

The 19-year-old Devendro exhibited great skill against Asylbek, a bronze medal winner at the 2011 Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. After the opening three minutes of play the scores were levelled at four-all. But Devendro took the game away from the Kyrgyz boxer in the second round, with the help of some exquisite combinations and a nifty footwork.

In the end, the Indian went on to secure his place in the next round of the championship with a 14:8 victory. In the round-of-32, he will take on Joselito Velazquez of Mexico on October 3.

The 2010 Commonwealth gold medallist, Suranjoy Singh, will also face Zsolt Dobradi of Hungary in the flyweight division while former Commonwealth games gold medallist Akhil Kumar will take on Filip Barak of Slovakia in a keenly-awaited contest.
