Travelling all the way from various districts of the state, they gathered on the green turf on the Museum premises. A lazy chit-chat on a Sunday afternoon was not their aim.
These people had burned the midnight oil and made it into the PSC rank list for the Higher Secondary School Teacher (HSST) examination (English) held in January 2011. Even after the release of the short list, their dream of securing a job still remains a distant dream.
During these meetings, the rank holders comprising men and women discuss and draft pleas to submit to the PSC authorities and MLAs to speed up the recruitment process. “Vacancies in higher secondary - senior, junior - vocational higher secondary -senior, junior- categories are to be filled from this list. Nearly 600 vacancies have been reported at present and the list has 333 names. At the same time, the recruitment process of the LDC examination, which had lakhs of applicants, is happening at a faster rate,” said V R Sreekumar, a rank holder.
The rank holders too have expressed resentment over the appointment of guest lecturers to the vacancies.
“For appointing a guest lecturer, paying a maximum of Rs 7,000 per month is enough. Whereas, for a permanent employee, the authorities have to pay at least some Rs 25,000,” said a rank holder. This is for the third time that the rank holders are organising the meeting.
“For the first meeting, we had called the rank holders through an employment weekly and met at the University Library in the city. From then onwards, we have been communicating via SMS to inform others about the next meeting,” said K S Mohammed Aslam, another rank holder.
Museum premises became the venue for the next two meetings. Each meeting would be an hour or one-and-a-half-hours long. Rank holders from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam were present during Sunday’s meeting.
