New Delhi: The Delhi High court on Wednesday night ruled that the strike by the ground staff of Indian (Airlines) was illegal and ordered workers to return to work.
Justice J P Singh banned demonstration within 200-metre radius of the Delhi airport and asked workers to participate in talks offered by the Central Labour Commissioner.
The Chief Labour Commissioner too declared the strike by around 13,000 workers affiliated to the Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) “illegal” and warned them of prosecution.
"It has been reported to this office that you have resorted to strike during the pendency of conciliation proceedings. You may be aware that to proceed on strike during pendency of conciliation period has not only rendered the strike illegal but also made you liable for prosecution under the provision of Industrial Dispute Act, 1947," said Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) S K Mukhopadhyaya in a letter to ACEU general secretary J K Badola.
"You are also requested to come to this office at the earliest for a meaningful dialogue across the table to resolve the issue of wage revision and other allied matters," Mukhopadhyaya said.
The airline’s management has sued ACEU, which represents the airline's ground staff and cabin crew and suspended 23 employees.
Around 12,000 airline employees working in check-in, ticketing, baggage handling and loading and cabin crew are on strike to demanding promotional parity with their Air India counterparts after the two carriers are merged in July.
