New Delhi: Delhi government has decided to scrap the controversial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor in South Delhi.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the model has failed in Delhi and there was growing demand to get rid of it as a lot of accidents had happened on the corridor.

The nearly 6 km-long BRT corridor, from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand in south Delhi was a legacy of the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government and was opened in 2008.

The BRT corridor had led to massive traffic jams prompting demands from citizens that it should be scrapped. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's predecessor Sheila Dikshit had backed BRT till the very end of her tenure but had relented just before the December Assembly polls in 2013, promising to disband it if voted back to power. She was trounced in the polls.

The government had spent around Rs 150 crore to build the BRT corridor.
