DEEO official held on bribe charge

CHENNAI: T Kannan, Superintendent, DEEO Office, Nagapattinam, was arrested on charges of bribery on Wednesday, said a release form the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Office.On the basis of a complaint filed on September 27 by M Thangeshwaran, Second Grade Teacher, Vaitheeshwarankoil, Kannan had demanded a bribe of `2000 on September 26. When the complainant said that he did not have so much cash readily on him, Kannan gave him a bank account number and demanded that he deposit the amount in the bank.Acting on the complaint, the V&AC sleuths laid a trap to catch Kannan while accepting the bribe. On September 28, around 10 am, Thangeshwaran asked Kannan to come to the tea shop outside his office to collect the money. K Manickavasagam, DSP, V&AC, Nagapattinam, and his party, who were lying in wait caught Kannan red-handed and recovered the bribe money.Thangeshwaran had requested Kannan to deliver a Mutual Transfer Order issued by the DEEO, Nagapattinam for which he demanded a bribe.Van crashes into busesA bystander was hurt as a n office van hit two buses before coming to a halt at Ambattur on Tuesday.According to eyewitnesses, a Tempo Traveller (TN 01 S 1521) entering 2nd Main Road, Ambattur IE, from Northern Avenue Road, hit an MTC bus on the other side of the road, before backing into another bus moving in the opposite direction. No one in the van or the buses was injured, but a bystander Vinodh of Katpadi was hit by the van and was injured.The driver and passengers of the van went missing soon after the incident.
