TIRUNELVELI: Dalits of Pandapuli village in Tirunelveli district offered worship at Kannanallur Mariamman temple near Sankarankoil on Tuesday, in spite of opposition by the caste Hindus, who, in protest against allowing Dalits into the temple, were camping at a nearby hillock for the second day on Tuesday.While Dalits have been offering worship from outside the temple for years, they first made their demand to be allowed inside the temple in 1999. But the Caste Hindus went to court and the temple was closed. Following a GO, Dalits started going to the temple by 2008 end and in May 2010, they offered worship during the temple festival. This year also, Dalits were allowed by the district administration to offer worship in view of the temple festival on June 14, between 8 am and 12 noon. On Tuesday, Dalits offered worship at the temple despite protest by the Caste Hindus.
