A groom in complete wedding attire – dhoti, kurta, and headgear (mukut) – along with his marriage procession was spotted in the queue at the entrance of Barshapara Stadium in Assam’s Guwahati, where the high voltage IPL match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take place on Sunday. The scene attracted the attention of fellow matchgoers.
In a conversation with News18 Assam reporter Bipul Barman, the groom, Arup Acharya said that it was his wedding day but “Cricket is more important to me than my marriage”.
“I support Kolkata Knight Riders. We rarely get to watch IPL or International cricket matches frequently in our Northeastern states. If I missed this match, I couldn’t enjoy it again, so I talked to my to-be father-in-law and requested him to postpone the marriage by one day.”
The groom arrived from Dharma Nagar, Tripura with his ‘baratees’ (wedding procession).
“I promised my to-be father-in-law that I would reach in time for marriage on Monday, May 20. So, After watching the match I will return to Dharmanagar by train after midnight by 1:00 am,” the groom further said.
The news of Bollywood actor and superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s presence in the stadium is also a huge crowd-puller in stadiums of Northeastern states. Assam’s local boy, Riyan Parag playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) is yet another attraction for spectators.
Even the Stadium authority reserved a particular room inside the premises for Shah Rukh Khan so that his fans could have a glimpse.
Chief Ministers of several northeastern states along with Assam Governor Golab Chand Kataria are also expected to be in attendance during the match. More than 40,000 spectators are expected to arrive at the stadium where the seating capacity is 36000 only.
