BANGALORE: Apart from widening ‘cracks’ in the Bangalore University’s administration, heavy rains on Tuesday evening caused cracks to the 154-year-old Central College building. Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Rajaji Hall and Pre-Examination Coaching Centre were filled with water, threatening the shelflife of varsity documents, furniture, computers and other equipment. While the central dome in VC Dr N Prabhu Dev’s chamber is sealed off with wooden rims, the reception area outside his door was a sorry scene. Rain water dripped heavily from the openings in the roof. The staff at the VC’s secretariat hurried around, and placed a bucket in the centre of the office. While the bucket filled fast, water dripped down from the other cracks, filling almost the entire area. Rajaji Hall, which is next to the VC’s office, is a makeshift evaluation centre for the ongoing Law examination answer scripts. Staff members here said that evaluations of Law answer scripts have been going on for ten days. “We keep all the answer scripts in cupboards. However, with water dripping from the top and falling on the cupboards, there are chances that answer scripts will be foiled,” said a BU staffer. The Pre-Examination Coaching Centre here provides coaching for competitive exams such as IAS and KAS. This was perhaps the worst affected. Desperate non-teaching staff members tried helplessly to push away water from a computer table. Devaraj L, who is incharge of the Centre, said that this was the state-of-affairs for the past three years, after he assumed charge. “We have complained to the Engineering Section. They have visited the campus and even did an estimate, but we have not heard from them again. With many computers present in this section, there is always the risk of grounding,” said Devaraj. University Engineer N Putta Swamy blamed the AEE on the campus for not having reported the condition to him. “They are supposed to report to me about such conditions. I will personally inspect the condition,” he said.
