As many as 72 per cent of corporate employees in India, struggling with stress-related diseases, are switching to treatments like ayurveda, naturopathy, acupuncture and acupressure. Kochi ranks third in this trend, after Delhi and Mumbai, reveals a recent survey by the apex industry body, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

The survey titled, ‘Demand of Homoeopathy and Ayurveda medicines in metros’ was conducted under the aegis of ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation.

The survey was able to target corporate employees from 18 broad sectors, with the maximum being from the IT sector (17 per cent). Around 55 per cent of the survey respondents fell in the age group of 20-29 years, followed by 30-39 years (26 per cent), 40-49 years (16 per cent) and 50-59 years (2 per cent), indicating larger acceptance by the youth.

Responding to the survey results, V K Mathews, founder and executive chairman, IBS Group of Companies, said, “Professionals in Kerala do not have enough experience of working under pressure. Hence they are affected by stress-related diseases easily. Since stress cannot be cured by medicine alone, they combine it with natural treatments,” he added.

In Kerala more and more professionals are opting for dhara and massaging.  “Insomnia, back ache, severe headache and eye diseases are common issues among young professionals. Many go for dhara and massage to relieve stress. It also helps to improve concentration,” said Dr PTN Vasudevan Mooss, chairman and managing director, SNA Ayurveda Nursing Home, Thrissur.

A Balakrishnan, chief technology officer, Geojit BNP Paribas, who underwent naturopathy treatment recently said it purifies the body and has no side effects.

According to the ASSOCHAM survey, the demand for homeopathy and ayurveda medicines has risen in the last five years. For chronic ailments such as respiratory diseases, skin diseases, viral infections, asthma and allergic disorders, people prefer traditional  treatments. As of now more than 40,000 branded and 2,500 traditional ayurveda products are available in the market.

According to an estimate of the World Health Organization (WHO) more than one billion people are using herbal medicines globally. In India, more than 65 per cent of people living in rural areas are using medicinal plants to meet their primary health care requirements.
