Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, while speaking in the Lok Sabha, took a jibe at the Congress party saying they will be seated in the visitor gallery after the next election, and added that they failed as Opposition.
The prime minister, while replying to the ‘Motion of Thanks’ to President Droupadi Murmu’s address, said, “I appreciate the Opposition’s resolve to remain in the opposition for a long time…The way you sat here (in govt) for many decades, the same way you resolve to sit there (in opposition)…The public will certainly give you its blessings…”

Here’s what PM Modi said while replying to President’s address in Lok Sabha-
- “When the President came to this new Parliament building to address all of us and the pride and honour with which Sengol led the entire procession – we were walking behind it. When we become a witness to the reflection of that holy moment of India’s independence in this new tradition in the new Parliament building, the honour of democracy rises,” the prime minister said.
- PM Modi further targeted the Congress party saying it was responsible for the “state of opposition right now”.
- “They (Congress) have failed miserably as opposition and have dragged down other opposition leaders with them. They are scared if other young leaders will speak, it will be harmful to that one young leader,” he said.
- “I have no problem with relatives in one party but ‘parivaar’ should not be the party. Their attempt to launch the same failed product has forced their shop to the brink of closing,” the prime minister said.

- The prime minister also added that “the (Opposition) failed to fulfil their responsibility as opposition. I have always said that the country needs a good opposition.”
- PM Modi further guaranteed that India will be the world’s 3rd biggest economy in his third term. “We won’t let this take 30 years. It’ll be done in my third term,” he said.
- “India was the 11th largest economy in 2014. Today, India is the 5th largest economy and yet they (Congress) are silent. They had even lost the ability to dream…It is Modi’s guarantee that in our third term, India will be the third-largest economic power,” the prime minister stated.
- Comparing the pace of development, PM Modi noted that it would have taken Congress 100 years to build 4 crore houses. “We built 4 crore houses for the poor. For the urban poor, we built 80 lakh pucca houses. Had these been built at the speed of Congress…it would have taken 100 years to do this work. Five generations would have passed by then.”
- “Congress’ mindset is that it has never trusted the capability of the country. It considered itself rulers and the public as someone lesser, someone smaller…” he added.
- Blaming Congress for ‘strengthening’ inflation, PM Modi said, “Two songs on inflation were superhits in our country – ‘Mehngai Mar Gayi’ and ‘Mehngai Dayain Khaye Jaat Hai’. Both of these songs came during Congress’ governance. Inflation was in double digits during UPA’s tenure, it can’t be denied. What was their government’s logic? Insensitivity. They said – you can have expensive ice creams but why do you cry about inflation?…Whenever Congress came to power, it strengthened inflation.”
- “Congress can’t tolerate OBCs” quipped PM Modi adding that the UPA government did not do justice to OBCs. “Congress party and the UPA government did not do justice with OBCs. A few days ago, Karpoori Thakur ji was conferred with Bharat Ratna. In 1970, when he became Bihar CM, what not was done to destabilise his government? Congress can’t tolerate OBCs…They keep counting how many OBCs are there in the government. Can’t you (Congress) see the biggest OBC here?” he asked.

- The prime minister also talked about growth in the Defence Sector saying the country has become more empowered in the area of security compared to the last 10 years. “The country is experiencing security and peace. Compared to the last 10 years, the country has indeed become empowered in the area of security. Terrorism and naxalism are now restricted to a small circle. But India’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism is now compelling the entire world to walk towards this policy…We should be proud of the valour of India’s military,” he said.
- “People may try to break their morale as much as they want but I trust our military…A few politicians would say something for the military and that would demoralise it – those who think so should come out of those dreams…If they become someone’s agent and such language comes out of anywhere, country can never accept it,” he added.
- Speaking about the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi expressed confidence that the BJP will cross 370 seats and NDA will cross 400 seats in the 2024 elections. “The third term of our government is not very far now. Only 100-125 days remain to go…I don’t go into numbers but I can see the mood of the country. It will make the NDA cross 400 and BJP will definitely get 370 seats…The third term will be about taking very big decisions…” he said.
