Cornering opposition councillors of the Corporation who are raising a hue and cry over various encroached settlements in and outside the city, Congress councillors have lashed out against the CITU for encroaching on a comfort station in the heart of the city.

The CITU office, currently functioning on Market Road, had once been a comfort station run by the Corporation, the councillors said.

Congress councillor Leno Jacob said the comfort station was built 20 years ago and was functioning as a public utility till the CITU took over the building.

Denying these charges Opposition leader K J Jacob who is also the district president of the CITU said that High Court had ordered the Corporation to close down the comfort station based on a petition filed by an owner of a nearby building.

“He had gone to court stating that the sewage waste disposed off near his building was causing health problems for the workers. Based on this, the court asked the Corporation to shut down the comfort station. Since the building was lying unused, a suggestion to allow the CITU to set up an office there was put up with the Council. It was approved,” Jacob said.

However, sources with the Corporation said it had lost the case then because the lawyer representing the Corporation had failed to appear in court.

“There was no conscious effort by the Corporation to retain the comfort station even though it was extremely useful for the public. Everything was working in the CITU’s favour because the left was the ruling front in the Council. Besides, since the  comfort station working was stayed, the building cannot be used by anyone till a judgement is passed,” sources added. Mayor Tony Chammany was unavailable for comments.
