New Delhi: The UPA Government launched a counter-attack on the NDA over the Quattrocchi issue on Tuesday, saying it failed the nation on Bofors issue when Ottavio Quattrocchi was detained in Malaysia and the then NDA government did not succeed in getting him extradited.

Trying to turn the tables on the BJP, the Congress says according to the court verdict itself the BJP sabotaged the case in Malaysia. "They had been chasing the Bofors case for more than 10 years at that time. In Malaysia, it was the NDA government which failed," Union Minister Kapil Sibal said.

He said the BJP had been provided with "a great opportunity" at that time but they "failed the nation." Sibal rejected the demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying the NDA should have resigned at that time for its "failure".

"We are expediting the matter with a proper and right approach. Our CBI team will reach Argentina before March 7, within 30 days from the date of Quattrocchi's detention as required by their law," Sibal said.

Criticising BJP's behaviour inside and outside Parliament, the Congress leader said the government was ready to discuss the matter and sought their cooperation.

He said the release of Quattrocchi on bail was not a setback and India will continue to make all efforts for his extradition.
