Yeddyurappa claimed to have raised Rs 500 crore through the campaign.

Bangalore: The Karnataka government has mobilied Rs 500 crore for flood relief through its fund-raising efforts in north Karnataka and Bangalore, Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said.

The government had mobilised Rs 200 crore from the padayatra (door to door campaign) undertaken in north Karnataka while Rs 300 crore was collected during a similar exercise in Bangalore, he told reporters while conducting the padayatra along with some cabinet colleagues on the streets of Bangalore.

“We will, however, continue such efforts to mobilise funds in all districts,” he said, thanking the people of Bangalore city and the state for their “overwhelming response” to the fund-raising drive.

Over three lakh houses were damaged due to the floods in the state. Yeddyurappa said a permanent housing scheme will be formulated within a year through the funds.

An amount of Rs one lakh will be spent for each house besides providing basic amenities like roads and electricity.

For this, government would need nothing less than Rs 3,000 crore, Yeddyurappa said.

Reiterating his appeal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wherein he has sought Rs 10,000 crore from the Centre, he urged Singh to declare the unprecedented rains in the state as “national disaster”.
