THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One of the major issues that the State Administration faces is the inadequacy to supply good water, said Chief Secretary Dr P Prabhakaran here on Friday. He was inaugurating a consultative workshop on preparation of handbooks on water quality and sanitation for the lower and upper primary school children organised by the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM). According to the Chief Secretary, good water supply can solve 50 per cent of the health issues. ‘’In spite of surplus availability of water from rain and other sources, the water is contaminated, mostly by faecal matter. We have to cultivate a culture of maintaining better quality of water, and special attention should be given to clean sanitation facilities,’’ said Prabhakaran. The inaugural function was presided over by CWRDM executive director K V Jayakumar. The workshop was attended by about 60 officials representing departments, teachers, experts in the education sector, UNICEF officials and scientists, among others. The workshop and the preparation of the handbooks were sponsored by the UNICEF.Local Self-Government Department Principal Secretary James Varghese delivered the keynote address. General Education secretary M Sivasankar, Water and Sanitation Specialist UNICEF Arun Dobhal, CWRDM scientists P S Harikmar and George Chackacherry also spoke on the occasion.
