CHENNAI: A relay hunger strike urging the removal of police forces from Idinthakarai and seeking Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s intervention was launched here on Thursday by Koodankulam People’s Protection Movement. Writers, artists and journalists have also expressed solidarity with the protestors in Idinthakarai. The relay fast is being held at the headquarters of MDMK, Thaayagam in Egmore. On the opening day, women Tamil writers including Kutty Revathy, Kavin Malar and Chandra sat on fast. Organisers said the relay hunger strike would be carried on by people from different walks of life. On Friday, transgenders will hold a fast. Fishermen, construction labourers and journalists would continue the hunger strike subsequently. The demonstrators said the police force should be withdrawn immediately and restrictions under section 144 (CrPc) revoked. “All democratic forces should join hands to oppose the repressive measures against peaceful protestors of Idinthakarai,” they said.
