Midnapore (WB): Ahead of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram's visit to naxal-hit Lalgarh area of West Midnapore district, Maoists exploded a landmine injuring
a CRPF personnel.
The landmine was planted along a roadside in Bamal area and when the CRPF jawan stepped on it, the explosive went off, police said.
Security has been beefed up in Lalgarh where Chidambaram is expected to visit on Sunday, with 1000 CRPF personnel deployed along with special anti-naxal force.
Twenty mobile camps of CRPF and special action force personnel are functioning at Lalgarh, Binpur, Salboni and Goaltore, besides the CRPF intelligence unit from Lalgarh, the sources said.
Chidambaram will meet senior officials from the administration and police to review the joint operations to flush out Maoists from the area.
Armed police and CRPF personnel have jointly launched a combing operation in the area in search of Maoists.
Bomb squad and forensic experts had rushed to the spot from Midnapore and Jhargram.
A CRPF helicopter made an aerial survey over the Maoist-hit areas of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts.
The helipad at Lalgarh was under round-the-clock guard by CRPF jawans.
Police said security was tightened in the three districts where the Maoist-backed People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCPA) have called for observing a 2-day 'black day' in protest against Chidambaram's visit.
A Purulia report said there was an encounter between Maoists and the police at Patanda-Singhbhum area in Jharkhand this morning.
The Purulia police said the encounter took place opposite to Bandwan in the district bordering Jharkhand.####
