New Delhi: The Indian government Wednesday said it favoured "quiet talks" to resolve the festering Kashmir dispute.
"The Prime Minister and I offered to talk to every shade of public opinion. The response has been encouraging," Home Minister P Chidambaram said during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha.
"I am in favour of quiet talks, and quiet diplomacy far off from the glare of the media," he said. "At the appropriate stage, I will share with the house the contours of the settlement that may emerge."
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had on Sunday in an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN had said that his government is in favour of talks with groups not "represented by the mainstream political parties".
"If they are accurate then yes we certainly do. We have been advocating a sustained dialogue between New Delhi and various shades of political opinion that is not represented by the mainstream political parties. I think the best way to carry out the initial stages of that engagement is away from the glare of the media," said Omar.
