Working at a bar might not be among the safest jobs, but a simple brawl over the payment of a bill turned fatal for the employee of a TASMAC bar at Cholavaram on Monday night.
A group of six persons attacked Appu alias Selvam (30), the bar supervisor, causing grievous injuries to his hands and legs, leading to his death.
The feud stemmed from an incident involving customers Vinodh and Mani. On Sunday night, they were involved in a verbal altercation with another employee of the bar. The two had the habit of consuming food and alcohol and leaving without paying for it. The employee they chose to pick on also happened to be the victim’s brother. When Selvam intervened, they were removed from the premises and went away swearing revenge.
The duo returned to the bar on Monday night at closing time along with four knife-wielding accomplices. After closing the shutters, they cornered and savagely attacked Selvam in front of several eyewitnesses and left him lying in a pool of blood. He was taken to the Rajiv Gandhi GGH where he was declared dead.
Police sources said that Vinoth and Mani belonged to one gang, while Selvam belonged to another, and had clashed infrequently over small issues. Mani has an attempt-to-murder case pending against him. The other four assailants are yet to be identified. “We have heard that the two main accused might surrender in court, but it is yet to be known for sure. It will be a good way for them to escape heavy sentencing if they confess and give the names of their accomplices,” added the source.
Selvam too had two murder cases pending since 2007 and 2010.
Inspector Ahmed Abdul Khader said, “These kinds of quarrels are common in this area. We are taking a look at the rowdy lists and rounding them up.”
