Chennai: In the wake of orders to beef up security in the High Court premises, the security police of the campus has acquired the latest in bomb detection technology. To train 200 policemen on how to use the equipment, a demonstration was held at the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority here on Sunday.
The portable explosive vapour detector, MO-8-TVIN, is designed for inspection of people, bags, vehicles, trains, aircraft as well as large areas like offices and apartments. The equipment has been developed by the scientists and engineers of the Institute of Applied Physics, Russia, and is capable of detecting military and industrial explosives such as TNT, RDX, C4 and their mixtures.
Other features include inbuilt rechargable lithium ion batteries, and a visual indication of the type of explosive. It also has bluetooth capability. The hand-held unit weighs roughly 1.35 kg, making for easy handling.
Sub-Inspector Elangovan said, “We have got five of these detectors, at a cost of Rs 15 lakh each. It is a matter of security and safety. If all the officers are prepared, we do not have to depend only on the availability of the elite group.”
Previously, a special group of officers were trained in bomb detection using the required equipment. This time around, all the officers are being trained to handle any such emergency.
