KOCHI: ‘Gala Fair,’ a charity expo organised by Assisi Vidyaniket an Public School, as part of Children’s Day celebrations was inaugurated on Saturday by K V Thomas, Union Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs. “The enthusiasm of the young children to contribute so much for charity is heartwarming,” said the minister who was overwhelmed by the students’ enthusiasm in raising money through the stalls and various programmes they performed. The programme titled ‘Assisi’s Snehasparsham’ is a unique effort by both students and teachers of the school who are raising money for a noble cause- purchasing specially designed computers, worth Rs 30,000 each, for the disabled children. The tablet PC named ‘Awaz’ was manufactured in 2010, by an IIT engineer Ajith Narayanan, the founder of Invention Labs, to support those who are affected by cerebral palsy and autism. Teachers say that the new device, the sale of which has begun in Chennai, has created ripples in the world of special education. At present the operating system is available in three languages- English, Hindi and Tamil. School principal Helen Job said, “the main purpose of our mission is to raise money to purchase a few such machines for the special schools which cannot afford to buy these computers. Currently we have focused on three schools.”The tablet PC, with just a touch, voices out what the disabled child wants to convey. According to teachers, this machine is a breakthrough to help solve the woes of disabled children and their parents.
