BANGALORE: In an attempt to train aspiring cardiac surgeons in basic skills, Narayana Hrudayalaya inaugurated cardiac surgery skill laboratory here on Friday.Dr K Srinath Reddy, President, National Board of Examination inaugurating the laboratory appreciated the hospital’s initiative.Speaking on the occassion Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya said, “Our expert cardiac surgeons believe that young surgeons should do at least 1,000 coronary anastomoses and 100 intra cardiac repairs in a simulated environment before performing surgery on human beings.” Relating about the laboratory infrastructure details he said, “The labarotory is equipped with 20 work stations with the capacity to train 40 surgeons at a time.The surgeons will be taught on a porcine heart housed in an artificial chest, so that he gets to know about the limitations of exposure in cardiac surgery.” “The centre will be conducting six year integrated cardiac surgery training programme along with the National Board, New Delhi.” he added.
