Kurnool: Apart from the touts selling seed to desperate farmers for a premium of Rs 1,500-2,000, Kurnool district is being invaded by middlemen from Guntur, Nalgonda and Warangal who are buying up stocks of BT cotton seeds and feeding the artificial scarcity. This kharif season, farmers are gearing up to cultivate cotton in about 50,000 hectares in Kurnool district.Officials estimate that about 2 lakh packets will be needed. However, only one lakh packtes have reached the district so far.Officials say that the government has placed additional orders with about 10 seed companies including Mahyco, Kaveri, Tulasi, Monsanto and Bollgaard. However, middlemen and black marketeers have hijacked the market by purchasing seeds in bulk using fake names of farmers.Sources said that about 65 per cent of the packets supplied by the government are not reaching the farmers.
