BANGALORE: Claiming to champion for the cause of farmers, former CM B S Yeddyurappa said, “As long as I remain in the scheme of things, I will not allow attempts to harm the interests of the farming community”, which elicited a thunderous applause.Speaking at the valedictory of the Global Agri-business and Food processing Summit, he averred that the summit only aims to boost the confidence of the farming community. On the protest by farmers against the summit during its inaugural, Yeddyurappa appealed to the farmers to wait and observe its results before reacting to it. He expressed happiness at the overwhelming success of the summit. “This function has helped to facilitate an investment inflow of over Rs 1,10,000 crore to the state,” he said.He urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to present an exclusive Agri budget in the Parliament. Yeddyurappa added that ensuring proper prices for farm produce, extension of farm loans at low interest rates and creating a farm-friendly environment would help boost the agriculture sector and GDP.He asserted that the UPA government’s move to open up the retail sector to FDI will be opposed tooth and nail as it will not benefit the farming community.
