every year due to potholes. The issue of potholes increases significantly in the monsoon season. To address this issue The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has reportedly launched a mobile app. The government institution has also fixed a budget of Rs 33.75 crore to repair the potholes. The app launched is reportedly named ‘Raste Gundi Gamana’ which means Pay attention to potholes, when translated to English.
Deputy CM and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar and BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath reportedly launched the mobile application on Saturday. The Deputy CM directed the officials to identify all the roads under the jurisdiction of BBMP and accurately report the potholes.
He then ordered the officials to mark the locations of the potholes on GPS and enter the measurements in the application. The software has been developed to accurately locate the potholes and notify the officials accordingly. This will help the officials to locate the potholes and repair them within a simulated time frame.
DK Shivakumar claimed last week that 96 per cent of the road potholes in the city of Bengaluru have been fixed. While answering a question from Jayanagar BJP MLA CK Ramamurthy during an assembly session, Shivakumar mentioned that within the tenure of April 1 and June 30, around 16,202 road potholes in the limits of BBMP were identified. He further added that around 15,686 have already been repaired and about 516 potholes will be repaired soon.
According to an official, Bengaluru city has a roadway network of around 12,878 km. Around 1,344.84 km are arterial and sub-arterial roads while about 11,533.16 km are zonal roads. “The potholes come up as the roads are dug up frequently by other civic bodies for various types of works. With the launch of the new application, we have also appealed to the other bodies to conduct a survey of their work and share the data with BBMP so that we can carry out the repairing works more quickly,” the official said.
