Gary Glitter, accused of having sex with underaged girls in Vietnam, has already served sentence in Britain for child pornography.

Hanoi: Police opened a judicial inquiry into accusations that Britain's disgraced 1970s glam rock star Gary Glitter had sex with underage girls in Vietnam.

Glitter, 61, is being investigated for allegedly having sex with two girls aged 12 and 17 since arriving in the country in March whereas the legal age of consent in Vietnam is 16.

He was arrested on Saturday at Ho Chi Minh City airport while trying to flee Vietnam on a flight to Thailand.

The rock star, whose real name is name is Paul Francis Gadd, rose to fame with a glam rock act in the 1970s, and is perhaps best known for Rock and Roll (Part 2), which is still frequently played at sporting events.

"We have opened a judicial inquiry on Glitter to determine whether he indulged in lewd acts with children or sexually abused them," said police spokesman Do Minh Dan.

"However, we can already say he has had sexual relations with Vietnamese adolescents," Dan said.

The charge of 'lewd acts with children' carries a sentence of up to 12 years in jail in Vietnam.

Glitter, who previously served a prison sentence in Britain after being found with a collection of hardcore child pornography, arrived in Vietnam in March and has applied for permanent resident status.

Vietnamese authorities said last week they were trying to track Glitter down after British media reported that the rock star was living with a 15-year-old girl.
