Visually-challenged students of Nethrodaya can now have access to printed books, thanks to the State Bank of India (SBI)’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative in donating a Braille Embosser, a printer which can convert printed texts into Braille cells.

The SBI, every year, donates such equipment for school children from economically-weaker sections. This year, it has handed over the Braille Embosser to Nethrodaya.

Nethrodaya founder and managing trustee G Govinda Krishnan, said: “Until now, if a visually-challenged student wants to write what the teacher reads out from a printed book, he or she can do it only with the help of Braille equipment. This takes much time and strain. Now, with the help of the embosser, when the teacher dictates notes, the student can type it out on the computer and using the embosser, take out Braille printouts.”

The SBI also donated a Mahindra Tourister Van worth ` 9.2 lakh to Ramana Sunritya Aalaya (RASA),  a centre for rehabilitation of children with disabilities like mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, etc.

It also donated a super computer at a cost of `1 lakh from SBI Children Welfare Fund.

A Krishnakumar, Managing Director & Group Executive (National Banking), SBI, told City Express that the bank had planned to identify some districts as ‘lead districts’ and select some of its banks as ‘lead banks’ to develop these districts by taking up development activities under the CSR initiative.
