It was an evening of celebration and oneness as the Brahma Kumaris, a spiritual institution, celebrated Raksha Bandhan with Sahodaran, a sexual health organisation, and Thozhi, a community organisation that works for the welfare of transgenders. Over 30 members of the Brahma Kumaris and the general public lined up to get the rakhi tied by Sister Prema, a senior member of the organisation.
Sister Prema explained the history behind the ritual of Raksha Bandhan. “But we give it new meaning. In the spiritual sense, the meaning of Raksha Bandhan is that the paramatma itself ties the holy thread of rakhi to protect the aatma,” she said.
Sister Priya, a member of the organisation, told City Express that they celebrate Raksha Bandhan every year. “There is no concept of man and woman. There is the aatma and the paramatma. That is the message we give to our followers,” she said. “We celebrate all the festivals in a grand manner. Religion is no bar. All are welcome,” she added.
The Brahma Kumaris is a spiritual organisation, head-quartered in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. It has over 8,500 educational centres in 130 countries, teaching the concept of ‘Rajayoga meditation’, an exercise for the mind.
