After having tried to get doctors to straighten their son’s bent back, the parents of 10-year-old Chandru from Eripalayam village finally found help at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Diagnosed with congenital dorsal scoliosis when he was barely two years old, the boy’s back had since then grown more and more bent. “Several private hospitals said that it would cost over Rs 3 lakh for the corrective surgery, which we could not afford,” said his father Kumaraguru.
Hailing from Panruti taluk, they eventually found their way to the local government hospital there where they were told that they lacked the equipment and the expertise to handle such an extensive procedure. What they did do for the boy was refer him to the RGGGH for a shot at having corrective surgery. After orthopaedic surgeons and neurospinal surgeons evaluated his case, they readied themselves for the surgery and ordered the rods and screws that would prop his back up straight.
“It took almost three hours to remove the bent and malformed portions of his vertebral column without affecting the spinal cord and then insert the implants,” said Dr Deen Mohamed Ismail, the orthopaedic surgeon who led the team. Once the implants were put in, his back began straightening out immediately and the pain that had been crippling him for almost a year receded.
“The entire procedure which had consumables worth about `70,000 was done under the CM’s Comprehensive Health Scheme and so was free of cost, despite being a complicated procedure,” said MMC Dean Dr V Kanagasabai.
