Hyderabad: For fans of Tamil cinema, Vijay is a name that perhaps needs no introduction at all. During his nearly 23-year -long association with the industry, the superstar has established himself as a force to be reckoned with thanks to his powerful dialogue delivery, rough looks and confident body language.
Today,on the occasion of Vijay’s birthday, we get you some of his most unforgettable performances.
Thalaivaa: Produced by S Chandraprakash Jain, 'Thalaivaa' highlighted the dark and violent nature of the underworld. Also featuring Amala Paul and Nassar in pivotal roles, the film ran into some major problem before its release, when theatres owners in Tamil Nadu refused to screen it citing security concerns. Despite this controversy, 'Thalaivaa' fared reasonably well at the ticket window when it was ultimately released.
Jilla: Touted as an action-comedy, this RT Neason-directed film is perhaps best remembered for the crackling rapport between Vijay and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. Featuring some high intensity scenes involving the two actors, 'Jilla' proved to be a runaway hit at the ticket window, receiving highly favourable reviews. The film also featured Soori, Kajal Aggarwal and Sampath Raj in supporting roles.
Pokkiri: A remake of Puri Jagannadh’s Telugu film of the same name, 'Pokiri' emerged a big hit at the box office and enjoyed a 200-day run at several centres. Vijay’s intense portrayal of an undercover police officer was liked by critics and audiences alike. It helped him bag a Filmfare award. Interestingly, ‘Pokkiri’ was later on remade in Hindi as 'Wanted' with Salman Khan essaying the lead role.
Kaththi: Boasting of a riveting storyline, 'Kaththi' featured Vijay in a double role. Directed by AR Murugadoss, the film was released on the auspicious occasion of Diwali. It found tremendous success at the ticket window, emerging the highest grossing Tamil movie of 2014.Interestingly, 'Kaththi' found itself in troubled waters when it was alleged that its motion poster was similar to an advertisement run by a popular Turkish newspaper.
Thuppakki: Touted as the first Indian film to be shot using the Ari Alexa camera, 'Thuppakki' dealt with the challenges faced by army officers on a daily basis. The film is best remembered for its gripping fight sequences and highly patriotic plot. ‘Thuppakki’ opened to an overwhelming response at the box office. It was later remade in Hindi as 'Holiday' with Akshay Kumar in the lead role.
Kadhalukku Mariyadhai: Directed by renowned filmmaker Fazil, 'Kadhalukku Mariyadhai' is regarded as one of the popular Tamil films of all time'. Touted as a romantic-drama, the movie revolved around the heartwarming relationship between a rich young man and a lively girl. Interestingly, a few scenes from ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai' were parodied in the 2003 release 'Thamizh Padam'. Vijay’s performance in the film was appreciated, helping him bag a Tamil Nadu State Film award.
