Bengaluru Woman’s Body Cut Into 50 Pieces, Infested With Maggots: Suspect Hiding Near Odisha-Bengal Border
Mahalaxmi murder probe: The Bengaluru police raided the suspect's house on Sunday night, but there was no indication of a body being chopped there, say sources

The prime suspect in the murder of Mahalaxmi, 29, whose body was chopped into 50 pieces and dumped inside the refrigerator of her one-bedroom apartment in Bengaluru’s Malleshwaram, is hiding near the Odisha-West Bengal border, according to police sources.

The mutilated body was found to be infested with maggots when Hemant, Mahalaxmi’s estranged husband, along with other family members, checked the flat from which the smell was emanating.

According to police sources, they suspect the murder could have taken place at least 15 days ago. This coincided with Mahalaxmi’s mother, Meena Rana, stating that her daughter’s phone had been switched off since September 2.

BODY MAY HAVE BEEN CHOPPED SOMWHERE ELSE, SAY SOURCES

The suspect was working in Bengaluru. The Bengaluru police raided his house on Sunday night, but there was no indication of a body being chopped there. The investigation team suspects that the body might have been cut into pieces elsewhere and brought to her flat. No bloodstains, except for blood flowing from the fridge, were found at the flat too, according to sources.

The motive is not clear yet, say police sources.

Earlier a person named Ashraf and others were questioned, but they are no longer being treated as persons of interest. He had claimed that he had stopped talking to her a few months ago. Mahalaxmi was in touch with multiple men and dated some of them, said sources.

HOW THE MURDER CAME TO LIGHT

On September 21, locals in the vicinity of the house complained of a foul smell emanating from the place. A police team, a dog squad and forensic experts visited the house and found the woman murdered.

Mahalaxmi’s family hails from Nepal, but had shifted to Karnataka’s Nelamangala 35 years ago. The woman was born and raised in Bengaluru, it was revealed.
