BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has again started its drive against illegal Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) on Friday after the court gave them permission to continue the drive. After High Court directions to BBMP, the civic agency decided to disconnect unauthorised OFC connections across the city. Infact, the disconnection drive began at Abbigere and was launched by Mayor Sharadamma herself in the second week of October. They had disconnected 15 km OFCs on that day. BBMP even used OTDR device, imported from Singapore, to identify illegally laid cables and started disconnecting them.It can be recalled that BBMP in its budget had expected Rs 780 crore tax from OFCs. Palike decided to collect a fine of Rs 900 per metre of illegally laid cable as against the normal rent of Rs120 per metre per month. However, a few service providers went to the court and the court told BBMP to wait for another 15 days. Technical advisor to the BBMP commissioner Rajasimha, who is leading the disconnection drive, said that the Court told BBMP to wait for two weeks and the deadline expired on November 5. “We have started it from today in Rajajinagar industrial area,” he said.Rajasimha said that there were 18 service providers in Bangalore who were using BBMP property. According to the documents submitted to Court by these service providers, they have laid cable in 6,200 kilometres. “We are disconnecting any such cable that does not come under 6,200 km,” he said.
