BANGALORE: If you complain about street lights that do not light up your locality during the night and you end up walking in the dark, then preserve kitchen waste. Thanks to Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) initiative, there will soon be a system to convert kitchen waste into electricity which will come to the rescue of Bangalore at night. In Bangalore, everyday around 5,000 tonnes of garbage is collected. Out of which at least thirty to forty per cent are kitchen waste. Kitchen waste like vegetable peels, fruit peels, flowers, coffee powder, tea powder, egg shells, cooked or raw rice, stale sambar, waste milk products and bones will be used in the process. These waste products can be used for generating electricity.Sources from the BBMP environment department said that they will deploy the technique called biomethanation, a process to convert kitchen waste to methane gas through which electricity can be generated. This is said to be first of its kind in Karnataka. “We are doing it on a trial basis. The state government also has plans to adopt the same to other city corporations,” an official said. With just five tonnes of kitchen waste at least 250 street lamps can be illuminated at a time for up to 12 hours.“To begin with, we will start at 16 units which together produces electricity that will light around 4,000 street lamps,” the official said. The BBMP has already called for tenders from private parties. “We are going through the technical evaluation of these private players,” the official added. The BBMP will also utilise the rotten vegetables and fruits from various markets in Bangalore which is said to be a very good source to produce methane gas. “In the BBMP garbage collection process, the concerned people will segregate waste into solid and wet waste. Meanwhile they will also segregate kitchen waste,” noted the official.
