President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday approved the award of one Ashok Chakra, two Kirti Chakras and eight Shaurya Chakras to the Indian Army personnel on the occasion of Republic Day 2016.
Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami, who was killed in an operation in north Kashmir will be awarded the Ashok Chakra, country's highest peacetime gallantry award, posthumously. On the night of September 2, Goswami was part of an ambush in Haphruda forest at Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir.
When two of his comrades were injured and pinned down in a fierce encounter with four terrorists, he and another soldier rushed to their help risking their lives.
The government release said, "Sensing grave danger to three of his wounded colleagues, Lance Naik Mohan with utter disregard to his own personal safety, charged at the remaining terrorists drawing intense fire from them."
Subedar Mahendra Singh and Sepoy Jagdish Chand (Posthumous) will be conferred with the Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry award.
Sepoy Jagdish Chand of the Defence Security Corps (DSC) died while grappling with terrorists during the Pathankot attack earlier in January.
Subedar Mehendra Singh moved with Lance Naik Goswami to evacuate his colleagues, drawing heavy fire in the process. He returned fire and killed one terrorist at close quarters which also bought them additional time, officials said. He was awarded the Kirti Chakra for his "exemplary leadership, selflessness and courage beyond compare".
Of the eight Shaurya Chakra given to Army personnel, three were awarded posthumously to Colonel Santosh Yashwant Mahadik, Naik Satish Kumar and Naik Satish Kumar.
