New Delhi: There has been yet another racial attack in Australia. A 20-year-old management student was beaten up by a group of youths in Melbourne.
The latest victim, Amrit Pal Singh, is from Haryana. He was assaulted when he was walking to the place where he worked on a part-time basis.
This is the tenth attack on Indians in the last one month.
Amrit Pal Singh spoke exclusively to CNN-IBN saying: "The incident took place at about 10:00 am Australia time. I met an unknown person at the railway station. He wanted to use my mobile but I denied. He started crying so I gave him my mobile for a call, but he took it away. I tried to stop him so we entered into a fight. His friends also came in. They tried to stab me with something like a knife. They then hit me and ran away."
Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi on Thursday took up the issue of attacks on Indians in Australia with the Australian High Commissioner.
Vayalar Ravi met Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy in New Delhi and urged him to ensure the safety of Indian students studying in Australia.
While McCarthy admitted that there was an element of racism involved in the attack on Indians, most of the attacks were primarily criminal in nature.
He assured Ravi that measures are being taken to ensure the safety of Indian students.
Earlier, Ravi had said that the Union Government would keep track of all students studying in Australia.
This is the tenth Indian student who has been attacked in the past one month. The last attack was on a 21-year-old Indian student who was slashed with a box-cutter by a group of men on a college campus in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria where most of the attacks have occurred.
Meanwhile, Australia's Channel 9 has reported latest police crime statistics as saying that there have been 2,500 attacks on Indian nationals over the past two years in that country.
