BHUBANESWAR: Bihar will procure about one lakh semen straws of high pedigree bulls of Jersey and Red Sindhi breeds from Odisha. The order was placed by the Minister of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Development of Bihar, Giriraj Singh, following his assessment of the Frozen Semen Bank under the State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AHVS) Directorate at Khapuria in Cuttack.The Minister, who is on a visit to Odisha to study the development of animal husbandry and fisheries sector here, expressed satisfaction over the infrastructure and processes including the breeds, semen collection, processing laboratory and storage systems. This model would be replicated in Bihar, he said.Singh held a meeting with the Secretary of Animal Resources Department, Satyabrat Sahu, and was apprised of the various ongoing programmes like breeding, breed preservation, artificial insemination, disease control and vaccination. He expressed special appreciation for programmes as Kalyani and mobile veterinary units along with animal health camps.He, however, emphasised on a policy regulation for maintaining optimum levels of exotic inheritance of cattle and bull breeds to enhance milk production in the State. States like Punjab and Haryana are maintaining 90 per cent exotic blood level in the cattle population while in Odisha and Bihar it is only around 62.5. The exotic blood level has to be increased if the goals of achieving higher productivity are to be achieved, he said.
