New Delhi: Lewis Hamilton still has a slender chance of winning the Formula One drivers' world title. The possibility arose after McLaren decided to appeal against FIA's decision to not to penalise BMW Sauber and Williams after alleged fuel irregularities during the final race
If the appeal is upheld, Kimi Raikkonen celebrations may end. Hamilton, who came seventh in the Brazilian Grand Prix, will move to fourth place and have enough points to win the championship.
However, it attracted severe reactions from teammate Fernado Alonso.
"If he wins the title because of this it wouldn't be fair. I'd be embarrassed for this sport. I'm not sure what Lewis would think - I guess if they give you the title, you don't think it's a present but rather that you deserve it. He would be delighted," Alonso said.
McLaren notified the FIA, late on Sunday of their intention to appeal against the stewards' verdict. But Alonso gave his backing to Raikkonen as a worthy winner.
"If you have more points, you are the deserved champion, just like in football. Kimi has won six races and Hamilton, like me, has won four," Alonso added.
On the other hand, Hamilton has made it clear; he does not want to win an F1 title through disqualifications of other drivers.
"To have the world title taken away is a bit cruel and probably not good for the sport. I want to win it on the track. You want to do it in style; you want to win the race or battling it out for the lead. Being promoted after other people have been thrown out is not the way I want to do it," Lewis has been quoted by the BBC as saying.
But certainly the final word on the 2007 Formula One season is yet to be spoken.
