BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is all set for the pulse polio drive on February 19, the first polio immunisation programme this year.Earlier, the BBMP had organised a cycle rally on February 16 in which 60 cyclists visited different parts of the city creating awareness about the Pulse Polio Programme. The BBMP has also given publicity through radio, TV, newspapers and also hoardings. On Sunday, Home Minister and Bangalore Urban District In-charge Minister R Ashok will inaugurate the drive at BBMP’s Yellamma Dasappa Hospital. Mayor Sharadamma, BBMP leaders and officials will be present on the occasion. According to BBMP Deputy Commissioner (Health) Y M Ramachandra Murthy, there are 6,50,592 children below five years in Bangalore at 14,48,050 houses. They have set up 1,800 polio booths across the city. As many as 8,352 persons have been involved in the drive as vaccinators. They include both BBMP and private college personnel. Apart from this, 266 vaccinators will be working with 310 mobile units. These units will administer polio drops at public places like railway stations, bus stands, Lalbagh, libraries and also visit apartments across the city. When contacted, BBMP Chief Health Officer Dr K E Manjula said that BBMP has 94 hospitals and polio drops will be given in all these hospitals, maternity homes and primary health centres. Last year, they were successful in the pulse polio drive and the success rate was 99.23 per cent. “There are people who travel for work during the day time and that is why the variation exists,” she said. Meanwhile, Ramachandra Murthy said that there are 64,881 migrants in Bangalore who have migrated from various parts of the country. Out of which 9,275 are identified as children below five years. Official sources said that the vaccinators will go to their tents and administer the life saving polio drops.
