In a bid to conduct a single entrance examination for admission to engineering courses across the country, as in the case of the medical admission, the All India Council of Technical Education AICTE) has formed a regulation.
According to AICTE sources, a regulation to this effect will be announced soon and will come into effect from the next academic year. “We have decided to have an all-India entrance examination for engineering admissions which is yet to be named. The regulation has been formulated and will be announced shortly,” said an AICTE official.
Sources said that there are about 150 engineering examinations being conducted in the country.
A lot of money is being spent on applications for numerous tests. When the Ministry of Human Resource Development decided to introduce a common entrance test for engineering across the country it was not made mandatory.
Some states favoured it while others were against it. While Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Assam favoured the idea of a common test at a meet of state education ministers held a few months ago, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh opposed it. However, opinion leaders and educationists across the state favour a common entrance examination stating that it would open opportunities at the national level and that students can join colleges across the country. Kerala State Engineering Colleges’ Management Association welcomed it as it would open the doors to students of other states.
But the state is yet to take a decision on it and discussions are going on. The Education Minister had favoured the state entrance examination. “The Central government had sought certain clarifications, but discussions are going on and a decision is yet to be taken. We have sufficient time,” said M Sherif, joint-secretary, Department of Higher Education.
