Ahmedabad Woman Gets Chicken Instead Of Paneer Tikka Sandwich; Sues For Rs 50 Lakh In Damages
Nirali, who has never eaten non-vegetarian food, has filed a complaint against the eatery for damages

A pure vegetarian woman, using a food-delivery app, ordered a Paneer Tikka sandwich from ‘Pick Up Meals by Terra’ in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. However, the restaurant ended up delivering a chicken sandwich instead.

On May 3, the woman — Nirali — had placed an order from her office in Ahmedabad’s Science City, NDTV reported. Interestingly, she started eating the sandwich. A few bites later, she realised that the paneer’s texture was harder than usual. Initially she thought it was soya, but it actually turned out to be chicken.

Nirali, who has never eaten non-vegetarian food, has filed a complaint against the eatery for damages. She has written to the Deputy Health Officer of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

Following the incident, the Food Department imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the eatery. The woman told India Today that this was a “dreadful” incident and it cannot be taken back. “Rs 5,000 is not enough and I will go to the consumer court,” she added.

Nirali said that should seek justice from the customer court and demand a compensation of Rs 50 lakh. She said that if the damages amount was higher, even then it wouldn’t do justice to what she felt.

The eatery is yet to make a statement in connection to the incident.

Last month, a man — Akash Gupta — slammed an online delivery platform after he received non-vegetarian momos instead of vegetarian ones.

The incident took place during Chaitra Navratri, a period when many Hindus abstain from consuming non-veg food for nine days.

“Hello Wowmomo, zomato, I’m purely vegetarian and I ordered veg things. But I got all nonveg items from your outlet, and the bad thing is Navratri going on. How you can make this big mistake!” Gupta posted on X.

His post was swiftly responded to by Zomato and Wow Momo. “Hi Akash, this is one big mix-up. It’s very serious and certainly not what we stand for. Mind sharing the order ID via DM so that we can resolve it ASAP,” Zomato replied.

Wow Momo also responded and wrote, “Dear Akash! We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. We would never want something like this to be happen. Requesting you to please share your invoice and contact details at [email protected] so that we can get in touch with you.”

In a similar incident last year, a penalty of Rs 1 lakh was imposed on online food ordering and delivery platform Zomato and restaurant partner McDonald’s by Jodhpur’s district consumer dispute redressal forum.

The fine was imposed for alleged wrongful delivery of non-vegetarian food in place of a vegetarian food order.
