New Delhi: FIFA, the world's governing body for football has been trying to popularise the sport, not just in terms of fan following but by improving the standards in India.

And after setting up centres of training in New Delhi and Manipur, FIFA has turned to Gangtok and Bangalore to set up training centres in the respective cities under its 'Goal Project'.

India has been selected in the Goal II Project of FIFA. The world governing body President Joseph Sepp Blatter wrote to All India Football Federation chief Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi about FIFA's intentions to popularise football in a country where cricket dictates the sporting culture.

While there has been a surge of fans watching the English Premier League and other European cousins fight it out on TV, the National Football League's stature is known to be best kept secret.
