Afghanistan won't give in to Taliban demands
Taliban says Karzai and Bush responsible for fate of hostages.

New Delhi: Afghanistan will not give in to Taliban demands to win the release of the Korean hostages. That was the word from President Karzai after two days of talks with President Bush in Camp David.

His announcement came as bitter disappointment for the families of the hostages.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmad said the two leaders will be responsible if anything happens to the hostages and he has also warned that Taliban kidnapping of foreigners will continue.

There were demonstrations in Seoul demanding immediate release of the hostages.

In New York, demands are growing for intervention by the United Nations. A reported phone call from one of the hostages painted a desperate situation.

The Taliban had seized the 23 Korean Christians -- 18 of them women -- from a bus in Ghazni on the main highway south from Kabul and killed the leader of the group after an earlier deadline passed.

Taliban wants the Afghanistan government to release rebel prisoners in exchange for the hostages.

The hostage crisis has focused attention on growing lawlessness in Afghanistan with Taliban influence, suicide bombs and attacks spreading to many areas previously considered safe and making road travel between major cities a risky affair.
