At a rickety rest shed in Keredi village, 76-year-old Nimai Charan Sahoo is counting his days. Deserted by his two sons and as many daughters after death of his wife Jemadei, Nimai took shelter in the rest shed a couple of months back. Left to fend for himself, an ailing Nimai is even unable to move out of the shed. While his eldest son Nilanchal (45) is a teacher in a local school, the younger Radheshyam (40) is an astrologer by profession. “Till my wife was alive, I used to eke out a living doing petty business and growing crops on two acres of land that I own. After she passed away, my health started deteriorating and I was unable to work anymore. My sons refused to bear my medical expenses and asked me to leave,” Nimai said.
Seeing his condition deteriorating with each passing day, villagers have now come forward to help him. Besides providing him rice and dal daily, they have moved the district administration for help. “He has been eating little food for the last few days. As a result, his health has been deteriorating drastically,” said Saheba Sahu, a villager. Administration too has decided to provide Nimai food and accommodation in the panchayat office.
