NELLORE: The four day Rottela Panduga(Bread Festival) began on a traditional note at Bara Shahid Dargah on the banks of Nellore Tank on Tuesday. The annual event began with Sadhat. The tombs of the 12 martyrs were cleansed with the tank waters before allowing devotees into the Dargah. The festival ends with Tahleel Fateha. As part of it, the tombs are covered with green cloth after the performance of rituals to keep the souls of the martyrs in peace.
A large number of devotees from all faiths who congregated at the Dargah, took a holy dip in the tank before exchanging Rottelu with one another standing in ankledeep water. According to a belief, devotees who take part in the annual event are blessed by the 12 martyrs. The devotees again visit the Dargah next year after their wish is fulfilled as a thanksgiving and leave Rottelu in the holy tank for others to pick them for fulfilment of their wishes.

It was said eminent music director AR Rahman took a holy dip in the tank and picked Adrushta Rotte before sending his entry for an Oscar Award in 2009. His mother has been taking part in the annual event for the past two decades.

Sk Rahim of Chittoor district who set up a sweet stall at the Dargah, said the devotee rush was more this year compared to that of last time. The second day is an important day of the annual event. Gandha Mahotsavam is performed on the second day night. Interestingly, there is a good demand for Pelli Rotte, Chaduvu Rotte and Videsala Rotte this year. Scores of young boys and girls were seen exchanging Rottelu on the first day of the annual festival.
