A class II student, who went to a pond in Bilhari village in Chhattarpur to attend the nature's call as his school toilet was locked, slipped into the deep waters and drowned, official sources said. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Government High School in the village under Nowgaon block, about 23 km away from the district headquarters, when nine-year-old Chotu Kushwaha asked his class teacher's permission to go to toilet, school official said.

After the victim found the toilet locked, he was asked by his teacher to relieve himself near the pond. While doing so, Chotu lost his balance and drowned into the water, they said. When he did not return from school in the evening, his parents began searching for him, only to find his school bag lying near the water body and his body floating in the water, they said.

Enraged by the incident, villagers staged a road blockade today by keeping the deceased kid's body on the road. Angry villagers lifted the blockade only after Additional Collector JK Shrivastava reached the spot to pacify them. He assured that the kid's family would be included in the list of below poverty level (BPL) families and his brother would be admitted in another school with better facilities. The Additional Collector also ordered the tehsildar to initiate a probe against the school teachers.
