Ram Prasad Pandey could not pay the hospital bill of Rs 8,000.

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 70-year-old man was allegedly held hostage by authorities of a private nursing home in Allahabad as he could not pay for the expenses incurred during his treatment.

The incident came to light when district authorities on Tuesday rescued Ram Prasad Pandey who underwent an intestinal surgery but could not pay up Rs 8,000 as the fee.

"Ram Prasad Pandey had visited the nursing home four days ago, where he was diagnosed with some problem of the prostate gland and was advised surgery. He, thereafter, got admitted but later on decided to move out when he learnt that the expenses could not be afforded by him", Chief Medical Officer Dr Rajni Kant Gupta was quoted by news agencies as saying.

Gupta also said Pandey was locked up in a room and his family members were told that he would be released only after the expenditure involved in the diagnosis was paid.

"The entire episode was brought to our notice this morning, following which we raided the nursing home, just a stone's throw from the Moti Lal Nehru medical college, and the owner - apparently sensing the trouble - handed over the old man to us", Gupta was quoted as saying.

PTI reports Pandey has now been sent to a Government Hospital where he will be provided with the necessary treatment.

Gupta said adding that an inquiry has been ordered into the entire episode.
