KOCHI: To increase the city’s self-sufficiency in agriculture, around 15,000 houses- both villas and flats- have been targeted for terrace farming this year. The scheme, which is being implemented by the State Horticulture Mission and the District Agri-farm Society, will incorporate various residents welfare associations and apex councils. As a part of the first phase of the project, 2,500 seeds will be distributed from next month. The scheme aims to keep the pace of development of agriculture in the city on an equal footing with IT and tourism, said District Collector Sheik Pareeth. With the rising prices, agriculture in urban areas has gained popularity among the public. All sorts of vegetables will be grown as part of the project. Quality seeds, along with organic pots and soil, will be distributed to households. Those who prefer farming in places other than terraces will also be encouraged.
