New Delhi: With TRAI's decision to bring into effect 'Per Day Per Sim' (PDPS) rule from September 27, mobile users have just a week left with them to send unlimited messages from their mobile phones.
According to the rule, service providers can not let their customers send more than 100 SMSes a day. "...relevant clauses of regulations have been amended and the regulations are being implemented from September 27," TRAI said in a statement.
As a result, resentment is growing among a large section of subscribers as many feel the number is too low and the regulation takes away their freedom to decide their own limits, while others are taking this move in a positive way.
"In a democratic country, people have the right to freedom of speech and expression, and this move infringes our right. Where goes the democracy, then? Moreover, we are paying for what we are buying," said Ashima Kapoor, a mass communication student.
Those favouring this regulation say that the TRAI's move will help in blocking scores of promotional SMSes fired every day to subscribers' phone, which will give consumers a sense of relief. Hardik Chopra, an engineer, said "This move will save me from those disturbing and irritating promotional messages sent out to my mobile phone, throughout the day."
Though the new rule sets a cap at 100 SMSs per day, it will hardly have any impact on communication between people. Thanks to apps like BBM and Whatsapp that let people converse without any regulator set limits in real-time for free.
