What is the Stardew Valley earthquake?

On the 3rd day of Summer Year 1, there is an earthquake. You will wake up to a notification that reads "There was an earthquake during the night." The earthquake is one of Stardew Valley's many random events, and is one of the events that is scripted. This earthquake does not have any negative side effects, unlike other random events that can affect crops, buildings, and farm animals.

This earthquake unlocks the Railroad region. The Railroad region is located north of the Mountain region. Before the earthquake, the path to the Railroad region is blocked by a large rock. After the earthquake the rock is gone, allowing you to access the Railroad.

New Areas

The Train Platform. North of the train tracks, there is a train platform. Trains will randomly pass through Stardew Valley between 9am and 6pm. If you are standing outdoors when the train is passing by, a notification will pop up stating "A train is passing through Stardew Valley" with a train whistle sound. Trains drop items, including Leprechaun Shoes, Stone, Coal, Iron Ore, Wood, and Geodes, and these items must be picked up before the day is over or they will disappear.

The Spa. In the southwest part of the Railroad there is a spa. You can enter the Spa and stand in the pool to restore energy and health. This is an easy way to restore your character without needing to bring along food so you can keep farming, fishing, and mining.

The Witch's Swamp. In the northeast part of the Railroad region, there is a cave. This cave is initially blocked, but will lead you to the Witch's Swamp after completing some quests given by the Wizard.

The Summit. In the northwest part of the Railroad region, there are steps that are blocked by a boulder. These steps lead to the Summit, which can only be accessed after you've gotten the Perfection achievement.

Forageables & Collectibles

Some forageable items can be found in the Railroad area. To maximize the amount of forageables you can find, you should clear out the weeds, sticks, and rocks. You can find the following items: Spring: Daffodil, Dandelion, Leek Summer: Sweet Pea, Spice Berry, Grape Fall: Wild Plum, Blackberry, Hazelnut Winter: Crystal Fruit, Crocus

Only one artifact can be found in the Railroad region. This is the Prehistoric Tibia. The other items you can find in artifact spots are clay, lost books, stone, and copper ore. In winter, you can find winter root and snow yams in artifact spots. In spring, you can find rice shoots in artifact spots. After all the lost books have been found, you will find mixed seeds instead of them in the artifact spot. If you have a magnifying glass, you can find an unseen secret note in the artifact spot.
