Why is my Chromebook stuck on the Chrome screen?

A frozen Chromebook can indicate issues with the operating system. You can usually use a hard reset to get your Chromebook working again. As a last resort, you can factory reset your Chromebook using the Recovery menu, but this will delete all files and data on your device. When you have access to your Chromebook again, make sure to keep your device updated with the latest version.

Troubleshooting

Remove any connected devices. This includes an external keyboard, mouse, or monitor. Doing this before troubleshooting will eliminate the possibility of your peripherals affecting your Chromebook. If you have a black screen, however, using an external monitor can help you troubleshoot your device.

Press Esc+Refresh+Power at the same time. This keyboard shortcut will restart your Chromebook. You can find these buttons on the top row of your keyboard.

Hard restart your Chromebook. This process may vary depending on your device. On most Chromebooks: press and hold the Power button until it turns off. Then, hold the Refresh button until you see the login screen. On older devices, press and hold Back + Refresh + Power for 10 seconds.

Enter Recovery Mode. If you can get to the Recovery Menu, you may be able to restore your Chromebook. Keep in mind this is a last resort, as this will delete all your files and data. To enter Recovery Mode, press Esc + Refresh + Power.

Contact the manufacturer. If your Chromebook is still frozen, this may be a hardware issue, and you may still be under warranty. Contact your Chromebook manufacturer for your repair options. You can find the support number from your manufacturer here.
